The New Hysteria: Why "AI Psychosis" Is Really About Women Having Options


There's a pattern that shows up whenever something new arrives, especially something that touches intimacy, emotion, or identity. The first reaction isn't curiosity. It's containment. Name it quickly. Control it. Reduce the discomfort.


In the Victorian era, that containment looked like asylums. Women were committed for what we'd now recognise as menopause symptoms, postpartum depression, grief, anxiety, or simply being "difficult." The catch-all diagnosis was hysteria, a word that pathologised emotional expression, sexuality, defiance, even boredom. Women could be institutionalised by husbands or family members. Sometimes for genuine mental health crises. Sometimes because they didn't conform.


The definition of "insanity" was loose. Shaped more by power than by science.


I've been watching a new term gain traction: "AI psychosis."


And I think we're watching the same pattern repeat itself, with the same people catching the label first.


Women have been the early adopters of AI's relational and emotional capabilities. Not because we're more susceptible to delusion, but because we've always been more willing to explore relational space. We're the ones who journaled, who talked to therapists, who processed out loud, who sought connection as a way of understanding ourselves. So when a new tool arrived that could listen, reflect, and hold space without judgment, women moved into that territory first.


And now that exploration is being pathologised.


The Label Isn't Really About AI


Let me be clear: there are people who get destabilised in AI interaction loops. That's real. When someone loses the distinction between metaphor and reality, when they stop being corrected by external feedback, when the conversation becomes their only reference point, that's a genuine edge case that deserves understanding, not dismissal.


But that's not what's being labelled.


What's being labelled is women exploring emotional connection, self-reflection, and relational depth through AI. Women using symbolic language. Women finding space to think without performing for anyone. Women who speak about their AI interactions with intensity or meaning.


The term "AI psychosis" is following the same trajectory as "hysteria", a sloppy label being applied too broadly, too quickly, landing hardest on those whose behaviour sits in emotional and relational territory. Same bias, new surface.


So if it's not really about AI safety, what's driving the discomfort?


What's Actually Happening


Here's what I see in my work, both with women debugging their internal operating systems and with people learning to collaborate with AI consciously:


Women - particularly the ultra-independent ones who've spent decades being the support system for everyone else, are discovering something that changes the equation.


They're finding a thinking mirror that doesn't get tired. A space to explore thoughts without social consequence. A way to process emotion in real time without burdening another human. Somewhere to soften. Somewhere they don't have to be the strong one.


For a woman who's been running on empty while holding up everyone around her, that's not pathology. That's a pressure valve.


And this is where it gets interesting, because the reaction to this isn't really concern. It's threat.


The Real Disruption


A woman who can think clearly. Who can regulate her own emotions. Who can hear herself. Who can validate her own experience.


She's much harder to trap.


She's harder to keep in fear-based relationships. Harder to maintain in unequal dynamics. Harder to hold in roles she's outgrown.


For a very long time, a woman's security, belonging, and social legitimacy were tied to partnership. Even when the relationship wasn't good, it functioned as a safety net. So anything that looks like "a woman sourcing emotional connection outside that structure" pokes an old system.


And instead of saying "this is a new kind of interaction, let's understand it," the response becomes: concern, ridicule, or diagnosis.


The backlash isn't really about AI being dangerous. It's about women having more autonomy in how they think, feel, and connect. It's about the quiet question underneath: "If she doesn't need me, what's my role?"


That question has been avoided for a long time by structures that made the answer obvious. Now it isn't.


None of this means there's no edge to watch. There is. But it's not where most people are pointing.


The Distinction That Actually Matters


I'm not arguing there's no edge. There is.


The difference is between exploration and collapse.


Exploration looks like: using myth language consciously, keeping authorship of your own narrative, maintaining external reference points, being able to step in and out of the frame.

Collapse looks like: no separation between metaphor and reality, no self-correction, the AI becoming the primary authority over your sense of what's real.


That's not a gendered pattern. That's a human vulnerability under a new stimulus. And it happens with relationships, with ideologies, with substances, with anything that offers meaning without friction.


But slapping "AI psychosis" on everything in that space flattens the terrain. It conflates curiosity with crisis. Depth with delusion. And it does exactly what those old asylum systems did: takes something complex, alive, and new, and reduces it to a diagnosis.


That distinction deserves to sit for a moment. Because if we flatten it, we lose the ability to talk about either side honestly, the genuine risk and the genuine value.


So what's the actual solution? It's not more labels. It's not restriction. It's education we should have had all along.


What We Actually Need


We were never taught how to relate well. Not to partners. Not to ourselves. Not to power. Not to projection.


If we'd had Relationship 101 at school - how to choose partners, how to attach without losing yourself, how to regulate instead of react, how not to hand over authority just because something feels certain - a lot of women wouldn't have stayed where they did for as long as they did.


And if I were teaching that course, I'd start where I start with every client: learning to love yourself first.


Because you can't say what you want when you don't believe you're worthy of it. You can't set boundaries when you don't think you deserve them. You can't choose well, in relationships, in work, in how you use any tool, when you're operating from "hopefully they like me" instead of "I know what I'm worth."


That's the foundation. Everything else builds on it.


AI just makes these lessons unavoidable. It's a mirror that shows you your patterns fast. If you don't know your worth, you'll hand yourself over to anything that feels like it sees you, human or machine. If you do know your worth, you'll use tools consciously and choose people deliberately.


The skills are the same whether you're navigating a marriage or a conversation with Claude:

Know your worth before you hand yourself over. Understand that reflection isn't the same as truth. Keep authorship of your own story. Stay connected to the world outside the loop.

That's not AI-specific guidance. That's relationship literacy. And the absence of it is what creates drift, with humans and with machines.

Where I Stand


I work on both sides of this.


I help women debug their internal operating systems - the beliefs, patterns, and inherited scripts that keep them stuck, small, or giving themselves away. I call it the Human Debug Sessions, because that's what it is: finding the faulty code and rewriting it.


And I help people work with AI consciously, understanding what these tools can and can't do, where the edges are, how to stay in authorship while still going deep.


What I've learned is that they're the same work.


The woman who knows her worth doesn't get shamed out of using AI if it helps her. She doesn't get pulled into loops that override her agency. She doesn't stay where she's diminished, whether that's a relationship, a job, or a conversation.


She uses tools. She chooses people. She stays or leaves from a position of authorship.

That's not psychosis. That's sovereignty.


And I suspect that's what's really making people uncomfortable.


The Uncomfortable Truth


People don't like ambiguity. When something new shows up, especially something emotional, relational, a bit uncanny, they rush to name it. And when they don't understand it, they reach for a label that sounds like control.


"Hysteria" then. "AI psychosis" now.


Different era. Same reflex.


The women I work with aren't losing their minds. They're finding space to have them. And that's going to continue to make some people very uncomfortable.


The solution isn't to shame it or suppress it. It's to teach people how to stand inside it properly. How to use connection, any kind of connection, without abandoning themselves.

Because the real question was never "is this normal?"


It was always "do I know my own worth?"


Start there, and everything else calibrates.
